It's generally going to come down to the field of players your faced with when you get sat at the table, which is also highly dependent on the buy. There tend to be a huge amount of maniacs and loose passives at the lowest levels, with some decent tag players in the mix as well and as you rise up the level its generally going to be more tag populated and eventually will come accross the decent lags as well.
I tend to adjust my style depending on the dynamics of players at the table, generally I stick with tag but sometimes its necessary to nit up if getting no cards to call off the maniacs shove's or vice versa to start and lag it up some if you have a tight table and especially a passive table.
Tag as a default strategy works well overall on most levels at least up to the 15$ stt's. I guess to answer the questions it would be a mixture of style adjusting to the other players at the table.
